HISTORY OF SHOTOKAN
The great karate master Gichin Funakoshui was a key pioneer in the development of modern kern in bringing traditional Okinawan karate to Japan. He himself was caught in the great wave of so and its prefectures. His contributions include authoring several of the first publications describing strengthening the realization that karate would envelopment and karate training, and the dive Master Funakoshi supported the realization that karate would evolve from a provincial fighting
During this period (1920's-40's) what was to become known as "Shotokan" continued to be developed by Funakoshi and his senior students, especially his son, Yoshitaka (1906-1945). In order for karate to be accepted as Japanese art (and not and Okinawa import) certain changes were necessary. One of these was to change the characters used to spell karate so that the meaning become "empty hand" rather than "Chinese hand". Other requirements were the adoption of standardized grading system and a standardize training uniform.
WHAT IS KARATE?
In a nutshell, karate is a martial art of Japanese origin that deals with attacks through evasive body movements and/or blocking, and counter attacks using kicks, punches and strikes. Joint locks, restraints and takedowns are also use, but to a Sesser extent. People variously practice it as a form of self-defense, a way of keeping healthy and a sport. As a self-defenses system, karate does not so much teach a set of standard responses to a set of limited scenarios, but rather teaches a set of principles that can be applied in and situation. As a method of keeping fit and healthy, it develops balance, co=ordination, aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. In addition, (and unlike many other physical activities), it also challenges the brain and requires. Finally, the spotting element allows people of a inclination to test their karate skills against others in a safe anode controlled environment. The practice of karate is divided into three elements: kimono (basics), kite (forms) and kumises (sparring). However these three elements should not be considered separate, as they constantly overlap and rely on each other.
